The 30-Second Exam Hall Shortcut: ⚡ Coelom Classification Ladder

⏱️ Save ~25 seconds

Acoelomates = Platyhelminthes. Pseudocoelomates = Aschelminthes (roundworms). Coelomates (Eucoelomates) = Annelids to Chordates! Statement A is the ONLY true statement!

1 Check each statement against NCERT coelom classification:
2 - Statement A: Annelids are true coelomates -> TRUE (first phylum with true schizocoelom lined by mesoderm).
3 - Statement B: Poriferans are pseudocoelomates -> FALSE (lack tissue-level organisation, acoelomate).
4 - Statement C: Aschelminthes are acoelomates -> FALSE (they are the textbook PSEUDOCOELOMATES with scattered mesodermal pouches).
5 - Statement D: Platyhelminthes are pseudocoelomates -> FALSE (they are classic ACOELOMATES with solid parenchyma).
6 Only Statement A is correct -> A only -> Option (4) / D.

Step-by-Step Rigorous Workflow & Mathematical Proof

Step 1

Define Coelom and Taxonomic Distribution

Presence or absence of a cavity between the body wall and the gut wall is very important in classification. The body cavity, which is lined by mesoderm is called coelom. Animals possessing coelom are called coelomates, e.g., annelids, molluscs, arthropods, echinoderms, hemichordates and chordates. Statement A is correct.

Step 2

Evaluate Pseudocoelomates and Acoelomates

In some animals, the body cavity is not lined by mesoderm, instead, the mesoderm is present as scattered pouches in between the ectoderm and endoderm. Such a body cavity is called pseudocoelom and the animals possessing them are called pseudocoelomates, e.g., Aschelminthes (Statement C is false). The animals in which the body cavity is absent are called acoelomates, e.g., Platyhelminthes (Statement D is false). Sponges (Porifera) lack true body cavities altogether (Statement B is false).

Step 3

Select Correct Choice

Only statement A is correct, corresponding to Option (4).

4-Option Deep Scan
1 (1)
✗ Incorrect
Verdict & Scientific Reason:

Statement C is false; Aschelminthes are pseudocoelomates, not acoelomates.

⚠️
Student Fallacy (Why candidates pick this trap): Statement C is false; Aschelminthes are pseudocoelomates, not acoelomates.
2 (2)
✗ Incorrect
Verdict & Scientific Reason:

Statement D is false; Platyhelminthes are acoelomates, not pseudocoelomates.

⚠️
Student Fallacy (Why candidates pick this trap): Statement D is false; Platyhelminthes are acoelomates, not pseudocoelomates.
3 (3)
✗ Incorrect
Verdict & Scientific Reason:

Statement B is false; Porifera are not pseudocoelomates.

⚠️
Student Fallacy (Why candidates pick this trap): Statement B is false; Porifera are not pseudocoelomates.
4 (4)
✓ 100% Correct
Verdict & Scientific Reason:

Correctly identifies Statement A as the only factually true statement.

💡
Why this is airtight: None.
⚠️

NTA Trap Alert: Platyhelminthes vs Aschelminthes Coelom Swap

Swapping acoelomate (flatworms) and pseudocoelomate (roundworms).

🛡️ How to avoid the -1 mark: Flatworms (Platyhelminthes) have NO cavity (acoelomate); Roundworms (Aschelminthes) have a FALSE cavity (pseudocoelomate).
